Who is Armand Girbes??????

Armand Girbes is a professor in Intensive Care medicine at the University Hospital VU medical center in Amsterdam. He chairs the department of intensive care medicine since 2001 and works with a great group of intensivists: Bert Beishuizen, Hagen Biermann, A.B. Johan Groeneveld, Jan Jaap Spijkstra, Erik Lust, Emmy Rijnsburger, Birkitt ten Tusscher, and Ellen Smit. Rob Strack, who was the deputy head of the department, sadly died on September 12, 2009 thus ending a very inspiring and productive collaboration.
Armand Girbes works very closely together with Toon van Galen, the nurse-manager of the department, and the managers of the division: Rien Caljouw, the business manager and Edwin Pompe (manager care). With the latter two Armand Girbes also works closely together as the chairman of the Division (anesthesiology, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, surgery, orthopaedics, urology, physiology, operation centre, ER and intensive care).

He was for during six years the president of the dutch registration board for intensivists (2003-2009). He is currently the president of the national audit commission for intensive care medicine and chairman of the curriculum commission on intensive care. He is the Dutch representative in the European Society of Intensive Care (www.esicm.org).
He studied at the State University of Groningen and worked for many years in Groningen at the Groningen University Hospital of Groningen. In 1998 he moved to Amsterdam.
Armand Girbes holds both the Dutch and French nationality and he speaks Dutch, French, English and German fluently and basic Spanish.
